The Role

As an EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Officer, you will play a pivotal role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating workplace hazards while ensuring compliance with regulatory and corporate standards. This position is responsible for implementing HSE initiatives across daily operations, fostering a culture of safety, and driving continuous improvement to create a secure and sustainable working environment. Reporting to the EHS Assistant Manager, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to uphold the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hazard Identification and Control: Recognize and mitigate occupational hazards, environmental impacts, and safety risks. Address HSE issues promptly during daily operations and attend operational meetings to take immediate corrective actions.
  • Compliance and Standards: Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements by developing, implementing, and maintaining HSE programs, policies, and management systems. Facilitate compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards, ensuring all findings and issues are rectified, closed, and effectively managed.
  • Training and Awareness: Promote safe work practices by providing essential training programs to enhance safety awareness and knowledge among employees. Conduct safety induction training for new hires, contractors, and visitors to ensure a consistent understanding of safety protocols.
  • Risk Assessment and Monitoring: Evaluate workplace hazards through comprehensive risk assessments and environmental impact evaluations. Monitor HSE performance, manage waste disposal, and oversee carbon footprint tracking via ENVIROS SKM.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure the proper maintenance and calibration of all safety equipment, including fire systems, gas detectors, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Regulatory Interpretation and Enforcement: Interpret and apply relevant standards, advise management on necessary actions, and enforce adherence to regulations such as OSHA 1994, EQA 1974, and FMA 1967. Maintain alignment with Kerry’s corporate standards, including RSA Standard (HE/HPA).
  • Strategic Planning and Reporting: Execute the annual HSE action plan and evaluate its effectiveness. Prepare and submit monthly HSE reports, coordinate HSE Committee meetings, and drive initiatives aligned with the company’s sustainability targets.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Liaise with internal departments, government bodies, and contractors to address HSE concerns. Propose and manage internal HSE-related purchases and support ad hoc tasks as required by management.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Minimum Diploma or higher in Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the food or pharmaceutical industry. Experience in HSE roles within similar sectors is highly advantageous.
  • Certifications: Registered Safety & Health Officer with a valid Green Book. Certification as a Schedule Waste Competent Person is a valuable asset.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in OSHA 1994, EQA 1974, and FMA 1967 regulations. Strong project management skills with the ability to drive initiatives to successful completion.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to engage with employees at all levels. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address HSE challenges effectively.
