Senior Systems Security Engineer – Rail Infrastructure Programme
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Security Engineer to join a major UK rail infrastructure programme, where you will play a pivotal role in defining, integrating, and assuring physical security systems across a large-scale, complex railway environment. This is a technical leadership position within a central systems engineering function, where you will act as the Design Authority, collaborating with senior engineers and specialists across multiple disciplines to deliver robust security solutions.
Key Responsibilities
The role encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities, including:
- Technical Leadership and Standards Development: Lead the development and assurance of technical standards, requirements, and specifications for physical security systems, including Video Surveillance Systems, Access Control Systems (ACS), Intruder Detection Systems (IDS), Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS), and Physical Security Information Management (PSIM).
- System Integration and Interface Management: Define integration and interface requirements across multiple work packages and third-party systems, ensuring seamless interoperability and coherence within the wider railway infrastructure.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with other engineering disciplines to integrate security systems into the broader railway system, ensuring alignment with programme and operational requirements.
- Technical Assurance and Governance: Provide rigorous technical assurance that designs and constructed assets meet programme objectives, operational needs, and compliance standards. Support risk management, issue resolution, and decision-making processes to uphold technical governance.
- Consultant and Supplier Management: Direct professional services consultants contributing to security systems work, ensuring alignment with programme goals and technical excellence.
- Project Delivery Support: Oversee the integration of systems from multiple suppliers during design and construction phases, ensuring they function as a unified and effective whole.
Stakeholder Engagement and Programme Environment
This role operates within a dynamic and evolving programme environment, requiring exceptional stakeholder management skills. You will engage regularly with designers, contractors, suppliers, and client teams to ensure that disparate security systems are properly interfaced, interoperable, and aligned with operational requirements. Your influence will extend to whole-life cost considerations and system performance, driving technical excellence and operational reliability.
Experience and Qualifications
To excel in this role, you will bring:
- A strong background in the design and integration of physical security systems, with a proven track record in complex infrastructure or large built environment projects.
- In-depth knowledge of Video Surveillance Systems, Access Control Systems (ACS), Intruder Detection Systems (IDS), Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS), and Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) platforms.
- Experience managing interfaces between multiple suppliers and technologies, ensuring seamless integration and interoperability.
- A proven ability to operate as a technical authority within multidisciplinary engineering teams, providing clear direction and assurance.
- Demonstrated experience in technical assurance, governance input, and building stakeholder confidence in security system performance.
Location and Benefits
This position is based in Central London (with potential for involvement in Birmingham-based projects) and offers a competitive salary range of £71,000 to £83,600 per annum, alongside a comprehensive benefits package including a 12% pension contribution and a hybrid working model (3 days in office).
