Key Responsibilities

The Sterilization Technician is tasked with a comprehensive range of duties centered on the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Decontamination:
    • Receiving, sorting, and inspecting used surgical instruments and medical equipment to assess their condition for decontamination.
    • Manually cleaning instruments using approved detergents and disinfectants to ensure thorough removal of contaminants.
    • Operating and maintaining advanced decontamination equipment, including ultrasonic cleaners, washers, and disinfectors, in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and organizational protocols.
  • Preparation and Packaging:
    • Assembling surgical instrument sets and medical equipment according to established protocols and surgical specifications.
    • Packaging instruments and supplies for sterilization, ensuring proper wrapping, labeling, and documentation to maintain traceability and compliance.
    • Conducting thorough inspections of instruments for damage or wear, promptly reporting any issues to the line manager to prevent operational disruptions.
  • Sterilization:
    • Operating sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves, in strict adherence to manufacturer guidelines and organizational policies.
    • Monitoring and documenting sterilization cycles, including critical parameters such as time, temperature, and pressure, to ensure optimal performance.
    • Performing routine biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring tests to validate the effectiveness of sterilization processes.
  • Storage and Distribution:
    • Storing sterilized instruments and supplies in designated areas, ensuring proper inventory rotation and adherence to storage protocols.
    • Distributing sterilized instruments and equipment to operating rooms, clinics, and other departments in a timely and organized manner.
    • Maintaining accurate records of sterilization processes, inventory levels, and distribution activities to support compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Quality Control and Safety:
    • Adhering to all infection control and safety protocols to mitigate the risk of cross-contamination and ensure a safe working environment for staff and patients.
    • Participating in regular equipment maintenance, calibration, and performance checks to uphold operational standards and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications and competencies:

    • Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or diploma in Health Science or a related discipline.
    • Certification in sterile processing or a diploma in sterilization is required.

  • Licenses and Certifications:
