Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Specialist, Mining II to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role is responsible for leading and supporting all Engineering and Planning functions, with a primary focus on developing long-term mine plans and optimizing medium-term schedules. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership in mentoring teams, implementing industry best practices, and ensuring mine designs and schedules are optimized for safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, this position will serve as a relief for the Superintendent, Engineering & Planning, providing continuity and leadership during absences or critical periods.
Key Responsibilities
The Lead Specialist, Mining II will be accountable for the following core functions:
- Strategic Mine Planning & Optimization:
- Develop and maintain Life of Mine (LOM) plans, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Optimize mine designs and production schedules through geological and geotechnical inputs, leveraging advanced software tools such as Hexagon.
- Lead project studies to support operational growth, efficiency, and sustainability.
- Prepare and update annual budgets, ensuring financial targets are met while maintaining operational excellence.
- Technical Leadership & System Development:
- Establish and refine mine planning systems, procedures, and guidelines in accordance with industry best practices.
- Lead the adoption and implementation of new systems and technologies across the team.
- Ensure all technical documentation, reports, and templates are accurate, clear, and compliant with Maaden standards.
- Operational Execution & Scheduling:
- Develop detailed quarterly and yearly schedules for mining and infrastructure activities, ensuring alignment with production targets.
- Coordinate with production and technical services teams to validate schedule feasibility and achievability.
- Conduct project due diligence, identifying risks, opportunities, and compliance requirements to mitigate operational disruptions.
- Safety, Compliance & Leadership:
- Champion Maaden’s safety standards and EHSS (Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainability) programs, ensuring KPIs and deliverables are met.
- Promote a culture of safety within the Mine Engineering Design and Planning function, actively engaging in site visits and audits.
- Lead and mentor mid- to large-size teams, fostering collaboration and accountability to achieve business success.
- Serve as a relief for the Superintendent, Engineering & Planning, providing leadership and direction during critical periods.
- Financial & Budgetary Oversight:
- Develop and maintain cost models and financial estimates using tools such as Excel and Xeras to ensure operational efficiency and budget adherence.
- Provide strategic financial insights to support decision-making and long-term planning.
Qualifications & Experience
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Open Pit Mining Operations, with a focus on Mine Planning, Drill & Blast, Operations, Projects, and management.
- Proven track record in leading cross-functional teams and integrating strategies to achieve business objectives.
- Underground mining experience is considered advantageous.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Expertise in Open Pit mining operations and project execution at the operational stage.
- Proficiency in mine planning, design, and optimization software, particularly Hexagon.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop cost models and financial estimates using Excel and Xeras.
- Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of mineral licensing, monitoring, and compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with geotechnical and safety regulations, ensuring adherence to Maaden’s high-performance standards.
- Leadership & Soft Skills:
- Exceptional leadership abilities, with a proven track record of managing and mentoring large teams.
- Strong financial acumen and budgeting skills to drive operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Ability to work in a systemized manner, establishing clear procedures, guidelines, and technical documentation.
