Position Overview

The Sr. Cloud FinOps Expert is a strategic, hands-on role focused on driving financial accountability and operational efficiency within cloud environments. This position serves as a critical liaison between engineering, finance, and business teams, translating complex cloud usage data into clear financial insights to optimize spending, enhance transparency, and support data-driven decision-making. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of cloud economics, coupled with the analytical rigor to identify cost-saving opportunities while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and KPIs.

Core Responsibilities

As a key contributor to the organization’s cloud financial management strategy, the Sr. Cloud FinOps Expert will lead initiatives to maximize the value of cloud investments through the following responsibilities:

• Cloud Cost Optimization: Execute comprehensive cost optimization strategies, including right-sizing underutilized resources, implementing workload scheduling, and eliminating idle or orphaned assets to reduce unnecessary expenditures.
• Discount & Commitment Management: Strategically manage Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and committed use discounts to secure optimal pricing while maintaining flexibility for evolving business needs.
• Financial Visibility & Reporting: Develop and maintain robust dashboards and reporting frameworks to track cloud spend, identify trends, and highlight anomalies. Provide actionable insights on unit economics, such as cost per workload, transaction, or user, to inform budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Governance & Policy Enforcement: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish and enforce financial governance policies, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints and preventing cost overruns through proactive monitoring and controls.
• Cost Allocation & Tagging: Design and implement scalable tagging strategies and cost allocation models to accurately attribute cloud expenses to specific business units, projects, or cost centers, enhancing financial accountability.
• Process Improvement & Automation: Contribute to the continuous improvement of FinOps processes by documenting best practices, refining standards, and integrating cost controls into CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows. Automate cost tracking, alerting, and reporting to streamline financial operations.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with engineering, finance, and business stakeholders to foster a culture of cost awareness. Provide guidance on FinOps principles, tools, and methodologies, ensuring that cost efficiency is embedded into design, development, and operational practices.
• Pricing & Consumption Analysis: Analyze cloud pricing models and consumption patterns to identify opportunities for optimization, including leveraging data-driven insights to negotiate better terms with cloud providers and maximize discount programs.

Qualifications & Competencies

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate a blend of technical expertise, financial acumen, and collaborative skills. The following qualifications and competencies are essential:

• Education & Certifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or a related field. A Master’s degree or advanced certification is advantageous.
  • Professional certifications such as FinOps Certified Practitioner, along with cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, or GCP), are highly preferred.
• Professional Experience:
  • 10–14 years of progressive experience in cloud engineering, financial analysis, or FinOps, with a proven track record in cloud cost management and optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP), with multi-cloud exposure strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional environments, bridging technical and financial domains to drive shared objectives.
• Technical & Analytical Skills:
  • Expertise in cloud cost analysis, financial modeling, and reporting, with proficiency in tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar BI platforms.
  • Strong understanding of cloud pricing structures, billing models, and discount programs, coupled with the ability to interpret and act on complex financial data.
  • Experience with cost allocation, tagging strategies, and cloud cost management platforms (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, GCP Cost Tools).
  • Familiarity with scripting or automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to enhance cost tracking and reporting workflows.
  • Proficiency in Excel or similar tools for financial analysis, modeling, and presentation of insights.
