Role Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between AstraZeneca’s scientific expertise and the broader healthcare community. This position requires an individual with deep scientific knowledge in the Vaccine & Immune Therapy therapeutic area, capable of engaging in high-level scientific discussions and presentations with Key External Experts (KEEs) in a non-promotional context. The MSL is responsible for generating actionable insights from these interactions and communicating them to the brand team to inform and shape both Medical and Brand strategies.
This role demands a strategic approach to product and disease area management, involving extensive collaboration with external stakeholders to cultivate strong relationships and foster scientific and strategic partnerships. The MSL will engage with major hospitals, institutions, authorities, and non-traditional stakeholders—such as policy and decision-makers, payer groups, government entities, researchers, and other key influencers—to identify and address gaps in the healthcare system and provide tailored health system solutions. This is a field-based role within Medical Affairs, requiring regular travel across assigned territories in Saudi Arabia to interact with healthcare professionals, external experts, and vaccination-related stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Building and Maintaining Advocacy: Develop, enhance, and sustain strong advocacy among Key External Experts (KEEs) by identifying, prioritizing, and expanding relationships to include non-traditional stakeholders. Engage in robust scientific discussions and medical advancements in a balanced, objective, and accurate manner.
- Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement: Identify and prioritize accounts based on patient care pathways, map multidisciplinary teams, and assess their maturity. Gain a comprehensive understanding of the local medical community, clinical practice trends, healthcare professional insights, and identify real or perceived gaps in scientific knowledge, patient journeys, and disease management.
- Fostering Scientific Partnerships: Collaborate with KEEs to advance disease understanding and drive evidence-based changes in medical practice that align with AstraZeneca’s Medical Affairs strategy and objectives. This includes participating in various medical projects such as clinical trials, Non-Interventional Studies, Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISSs), and scientific exchanges.
- Scientific Program Development: Identify potential speakers and provide training as needed for local events. Recommend participants for advisory boards and roundtable discussions, and serve as a faculty member or facilitator for these meetings. Present scientific data to healthcare professionals in both group settings (medically led meetings) and one-on-one interactions.
- Continuing Medical Education: Facilitate and support continuing medical education events for healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and clinical practices.
- Evidence Generation and Strategy Alignment: Support the generation of evidence in the region that aligns with the medical strategy of the disease area and product. Build and implement scientific programs designed to address unmet medical needs in priority disease areas.
- Insight Communication: Collect and share actionable insights derived from engagements with external experts to inform strategic decision-making within the brand team.
