The Blood Bank Technologist plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and availability of blood products for patients. This role involves a wide range of responsibilities, from donor selection and testing to the processing, preparation, and issuance of blood components. The technologist operates advanced apheresis machines for procedures such as red cell exchange, therapeutic plasma exchange, and platelet collection.

Key responsibilities include:

• Blood donor interview, selection, and testing
• Blood collection, processing, and preparation of components
• Selection and compatibility testing of blood components
• Operation of apheresis machines for various procedures
• Documentation and reporting of transfusion complications
• Performing serological tests such as blood grouping, antibody screening, and identification
• Quality control of reagents, gel cards, and blood components
• Maintenance of machines and instruments
• Checking blood donor screening results and deferral
• Performing NAT testing and machine maintenance
• System blood components defragging and ISBT labeling
• Relaying critical values as per policy
• Occurrence variance reporting
• Educating patients and families about health conditions and preventative measures
• Other duties as assigned
