Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Blood Bank - Laboratory Technician - Technologist - Senior to join our esteemed healthcare team. In this critical role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring the safe and efficient collection, processing, testing, and distribution of human blood and its components for transfusion purposes. Your expertise will be instrumental in maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance within our blood bank operations. This senior-level position demands meticulous attention to detail, strong technical proficiency, and a commitment to excellence in patient care.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of specialized tasks, including:
- Blood Donor Management: Conducting thorough donor interviews, selection, and testing to ensure the safety and suitability of blood donations. This includes performing pre-donation screening and deferral checks as required.
- Blood Collection and Processing: Overseeing the collection of blood and preparation of its components, such as packed red blood cells (RBCs), fresh frozen plasma (FFP), platelet concentrates, and cryoprecipitate. Ensuring that all procedures adhere to established protocols and regulatory standards.
- Apheresis Operations: Operating advanced apheresis machines, including the Optia Apheresis Machine for red cell exchange and therapeutic plasma exchange, as well as the Trima Apheresis Machine for platelet collection. Performing all associated procedures with precision and care.
- Pre-Transfusion Testing: Conducting compatibility testing, blood grouping, antibody screening and identification, and performing specialized tests such as Warm Absorption, Acid Elution, Rh Phenotyping, Coombs tests, Antibody Titer, Cold Agglutinins, Apt’s Tests, Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT) tests, and ABO-Rh verification.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Performing daily, weekly, and monthly quality control checks on tube reagents, gel cards, DayMate S reagents, and blood components. Ensuring that all equipment, reagents, and procedures meet regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records of all procedures, test results, and donor information. Reporting critical values and any transfusion-related complications as per established policies. Completing Occurrence Variance Reports (OVR) in the system or manually when necessary.
- Machine Maintenance and Decontamination: Conducting routine cleaning, decontamination, and maintenance of blood bank instruments and machines to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety protocols.
- Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAT): Performing NAT on blood donors to screen for infectious diseases. Conducting routine maintenance and quality control checks on NAT machines to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- System and Labeling Management: Managing the defragmentation of blood components in the system and ensuring accurate labeling using ISBT standards for traceability and safety.
- Patient Education and Communication: Providing clear and compassionate education to patients and their families regarding health conditions, treatments, and preventive measures related to blood transfusions, where applicable.
- Continuous Improvement and Compliance: Actively participating in continuous improvement initiatives, proficiency testing, and adherence to national and international accreditation standards. Contributing to the enhancement of blood bank operations and patient care outcomes.
Requirements and Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Science, or an equivalent Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Biological Science.
- Experience: A minimum of 0 to 3 years of experience as a Medical Technologist in a Blood Bank setting.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating apheresis machines, blood bank equipment, and laboratory information systems. Strong computer skills and familiarity with data entry and documentation processes.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in both written and spoken English and Arabic.
- Certification and Licensure: A valid license to practice as a Medical Technologist, issued by the relevant regional health regulatory authority (e.g., SCFHS, DHA, or equivalent).
- Personal Attributes: Self-motivated, responsible, and detail-oriented with a strong sense of accountability. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
