Senior Environmental Engineer (HSSE) – Join a Global Leader in Energy & Industrial Solutions

John Wood Group PLC, a distinguished multinational energy and industrial services company, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Environmental Engineer (HSSE) to lead and enhance our environmental, health, safety, and sustainability initiatives in Saudi Arabia. This pivotal role is designed for professionals who are passionate about driving compliance, innovation, and operational excellence in high-stakes industrial environments. As a Senior Environmental Engineer, you will play a critical part in shaping the future of HSSE practices, ensuring alignment with global standards while delivering measurable impact in one of the world’s most dynamic energy markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic HSSE Leadership: Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive environmental, health, safety, and sustainability (EHSS) strategies that align with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements. Champion a culture of safety and environmental stewardship across all project sites and operational units.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management: Conduct thorough assessments to identify environmental risks, hazards, and non-compliance issues. Lead audits, inspections, and investigations to mitigate potential liabilities and ensure adherence to local, regional, and international HSSE regulations, including ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and OSHA standards.
  • Sustainability & Innovation: Drive the integration of sustainable practices into engineering designs and operational processes. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and deploy cutting-edge technologies and methodologies that reduce carbon footprints, enhance energy efficiency, and promote circular economy principles.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Training: Serve as the primary HSSE liaison for internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, clients, contractors, and local communities. Design and deliver targeted training programs to foster a safety-first mindset and ensure all personnel are equipped with the knowledge and tools to uphold HSSE standards.
  • Incident Investigation & Continuous Improvement: Lead root cause analyses for HSSE incidents and near-misses, implementing corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence. Utilize data-driven insights to refine policies, procedures, and best practices, driving continuous improvement in HSSE performance.
  • Project-Specific Oversight: Provide HSSE guidance and support for major capital projects, from conceptual design through commissioning. Ensure that environmental impact assessments (EIAs), safety cases, and sustainability reports are meticulously prepared and submitted in accordance with project timelines and regulatory deadlines.

Qualifications & Experience

To excel in this role, candidates must possess a blend of technical expertise, leadership acumen, and a commitment to HSSE excellence. The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline. A Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, or NEBOSH) is highly desirable.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in environmental engineering, HSSE management, or a closely related field, with at least 5 years in a senior or leadership capacity within the energy, oil & gas, or industrial sectors.
  • Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of HSSE regulations, environmental management systems (EMS), and risk assessment tools. Familiarity with industry-specific software (e.g., SAP, Enablon) and proficiency in data analysis to drive informed decision-making.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities. Proven track record in influencing stakeholders, managing cross-functional teams, and fostering a culture of accountability and safety.
  • Certifications & Compliance: Valid certifications in relevant HSSE disciplines (e.g., ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, ISO 45001, NEBOSH International Diploma) are advantageous. Fluency in English is required; Arabic language skills are a plus.
