Role Overview

The Chairman of Surgery is a pivotal leadership position within the hospital, tasked with steering the Surgery Department in alignment with the organization’s strategic vision, mission, and core objectives. This role encompasses both high-level administrative oversight and hands-on clinical responsibilities as a Consultant Surgeon. Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement departmental strategies that advance the hospital’s long-term goals, ensuring alignment with healthcare best practices and regulatory standards.
• Administrative Oversight: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Surgery Department, including resource allocation, staffing, budget management, and compliance with healthcare policies and accreditation requirements.
• Clinical Excellence: Maintain an active clinical practice as a Consultant Surgeon, providing expert surgical care while mentoring junior staff and fostering a culture of continuous professional development.
• Quality Assurance: Champion initiatives to enhance patient care quality, safety, and satisfaction, including the implementation of evidence-based protocols and performance metrics.
• Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with hospital leadership, medical staff, and external partners to drive interdisciplinary collaboration, research opportunities, and community health initiatives.
• Academic and Research Leadership: Promote a culture of academic rigor and innovation by supporting research endeavors, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to the advancement of surgical science.

Qualifications and Experience

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following stringent professional and educational criteria:

• Education:
  • Graduation from a recognized and accredited medical school.
  • Completion of a structured residency and fellowship program in surgery, with board certification in the specialty or subspecialty.
  • Membership or fellowship status in a professional body, such as the Royal College of Surgeons (UK), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or an equivalent international organization.
  • Subspecialty training and certification, where applicable, to ensure expertise in a specific surgical discipline.
• Clinical Experience:
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of post-training independent clinical experience, including residency and fellowship training where applicable, following board certification or its equivalent.
• Administrative Leadership:
  • Proven track record in a senior leadership role, such as Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Head of Section, Head of Medical Service, or equivalent, with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in such capacities.
• Research and Publications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence through the publication of original research articles in peer-reviewed journals, indexed in reputable databases such as Index Medicus or similar platforms.
  • A minimum of ten (10) original publications, with the exact number subject to the discretion of the specialty committee and aligned with the requirements of the field.
• Academic and Teaching Background:
  • Essential requirement of academic and teaching experience, with a preference for candidates holding an academic appointment at a prestigious university or affiliated institution.
  • Proven ability to mentor and train medical students, residents, and fellows, fostering the next generation of surgical leaders.
