Materials Inspector

Position Overview

Atkinsrealis is currently seeking a meticulous and experienced Materials Inspector to join our dynamic team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for inspecting, sampling, and testing roadwork materials to ensure strict adherence to industry specifications and regulatory standards. Your expertise will be pivotal in maintaining material traceability, overseeing proper storage, verifying acceptance criteria, and ensuring comprehensive documentation throughout the process.

Key Responsibilities

As a Materials Inspector, your core duties will include:

• Material Inspection and Verification: Conduct thorough inspections of incoming materials, including aggregates, asphalt, concrete, steel, and geotextiles, against approved specifications and regulatory requirements.
• Witnessing Tests: Oversee and witness critical field and laboratory tests, such as sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, compaction/density assessments, slump tests, cube strength evaluations, and Marshall stability tests, to validate material performance.
• Documentation Review: Verify batch tickets, delivery notes, mill certificates, and calibration certificates to ensure accuracy and compliance with established standards.
• Storage and Protection Monitoring: Closely monitor the storage, segregation, and protection of materials onsite to prevent contamination, degradation, or misuse.
• Field Quality Checks: During paving operations, inspect asphalt mix temperature, gradation, and binder content to ensure optimal performance and adherence to project requirements.
• Compliance and Corrective Actions: Ensure full conformance to Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), Material Specifications (MS), and Project Quality Plans (PQP). Identify non-conformances, raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), and facilitate corrective actions to resolve issues promptly.
• Traceability and Record-Keeping: Maintain meticulous, lot-wise material acceptance records and ensure full traceability of materials throughout the project lifecycle.
• Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate closely with third-party laboratories and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) teams to align test schedules, review results, and address any discrepancies.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, you will bring the following qualifications and competencies:

• Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of ASTM, BS, and EN testing methods, along with hands-on experience operating lab and field equipment to assess material properties against acceptance criteria.
• Industry Knowledge: A solid understanding of asphalt plant quality control processes and concrete batching operations, ensuring materials meet project-specific requirements.
• Documentation Proficiency: Exceptional attention to detail and strong report-writing skills to document inspections, test results, and compliance status accurately.
• Compliance Mindset: A proactive approach to identifying and addressing deviations from specifications, coupled with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
• Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret test data, assess material performance, and make informed decisions to support project objectives.
