Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Blood Bank Specialist II to join our esteemed healthcare team. Key Responsibilities
The Blood Bank Specialist II will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:
- Blood Collection and Processing: Oversee the collection, labeling, and processing of blood and blood components, ensuring adherence to strict protocols to maintain product integrity and safety.
- Testing and Screening: Perform and interpret serological and molecular testing to screen donated blood for infectious diseases, including HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis, in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Inventory Management: Monitor and manage blood inventory levels, ensuring optimal stock levels to meet patient demand while minimizing waste and expiration of blood products.
- Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain quality control measures to ensure compliance with AABB, FDA, and other regulatory standards, including documentation and record-keeping for audits and inspections.
- Donor Screening and Counseling: Conduct thorough donor interviews and health assessments to determine eligibility, providing guidance and support to donors throughout the donation process.
- Technical Expertise: Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure the proper calibration and functionality of all instruments used in blood banking procedures.
- Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of evolving regulations and industry best practices, ensuring that all blood bank operations align with local, state, and federal guidelines to uphold patient safety and organizational integrity.
- Training and Mentorship: Provide guidance and training to junior staff members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the blood bank team.
- Emergency Response: Respond promptly and effectively to urgent requests for blood products, coordinating with medical teams to ensure timely delivery and support critical patient care scenarios.
Qualifications and Skills
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications and possess the following skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. A certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is highly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of three to five years of experience in a blood bank or transfusion service setting, with a proven track record of technical proficiency and problem-solving abilities.
- Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of blood banking procedures, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, and component preparation. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) is advantageous.
- Regulatory Knowledge: A thorough understanding of AABB, FDA, CLIA, and other regulatory standards governing blood bank operations, with a commitment to maintaining compliance at all times.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities are essential.
- Certifications: Current certification by a recognized professional organization, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), is required.
