Tunnel Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Tunnel Engineer to join our dynamic team at Hill International, based in Saudi Arabia. In this pivotal role, you will play a critical part in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of tunnel infrastructure projects, ensuring they meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. As a Tunnel Engineer, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, contractors, and regulatory bodies, to deliver innovative and resilient tunnel solutions that support the region’s growing infrastructure demands.

Key Responsibilities

The Tunnel Engineer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

• Project Planning and Feasibility: Conduct thorough site investigations and feasibility studies to assess geological conditions, environmental impacts, and project viability. Develop comprehensive project plans that align with client objectives and regulatory requirements.
• Design and Engineering: Utilize advanced engineering principles to design tunnel structures, including excavation methods, support systems, and ventilation solutions. Prepare detailed technical drawings, specifications, and calculations using industry-standard software and tools.
• Construction Oversight: Provide on-site supervision during tunnel construction to ensure adherence to design specifications, safety protocols, and project timelines. Monitor progress, identify potential risks, and implement corrective measures to mitigate delays or structural issues.
• Risk Assessment and Management: Perform detailed risk assessments to identify hazards associated with tunnel construction and operation. Develop and implement risk management strategies to ensure the safety of workers and the public, as well as the structural integrity of the tunnel.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all tunnel projects comply with local, national, and international regulations, including safety, environmental, and building codes. Collaborate with regulatory authorities to obtain necessary permits and approvals.
• Quality Assurance and Control: Establish and maintain rigorous quality control processes to verify that materials, construction methods, and final deliverables meet or exceed industry standards. Conduct inspections and audits to ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Technical Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and present detailed technical reports, progress updates, and presentations for stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and senior management. Maintain accurate records of project activities, challenges, and resolutions.
• Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of emerging technologies, materials, and methodologies in tunnel engineering. Recommend and implement innovative solutions to enhance project efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, candidates must possess the following qualifications and competencies:

• Education: A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field. A master’s degree or professional certification in tunnel engineering is highly desirable.
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in tunnel engineering, with a proven track record in designing, constructing, or managing tunnel projects. Experience in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, is a strong advantage.
• Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in tunnel design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, PLAXIS, or similar) and project management tools. Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, excavation methods, and structural analysis.
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid professional engineering license (e.g., P.E. or equivalent) and certifications in safety management (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH) are preferred.
• Soft Skills: Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multicultural environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Arabic is a plus.
