Key Responsibilities
The Firefighter will play a pivotal role in emergency response operations, fire prevention, and safety initiatives across MBCC’s surface and underground operations. Your responsibilities will include:
- Emergency Response Operations:
- Respond promptly and effectively to fire, rescue, hazardous materials (HazMat), medical emergencies, and other critical incidents across surface and underground mining operations.
- Perform structural, industrial, vehicle, and wildland firefighting in strict accordance with approved procedures and safety protocols.
- Participate in underground mine emergency response, including rescue and evacuation operations, to ensure the safety of personnel in confined and high-risk environments.
- Provide emergency standby support during high-risk activities, such as shutdowns, confined space work, and hot work operations.
- Be prepared to work shifts, standby duties, and emergency callouts as required to maintain operational readiness.
- Administer First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) until advanced medical care is available, ensuring the well-being of injured personnel.
- Firefighting Equipment & Emergency Readiness:
- Conduct thorough inspections of fire trucks, emergency vehicles, rescue vehicles, firefighting equipment, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and rescue gear to ensure operational readiness.
- Operate fire trucks, fire pumps, foam systems, hose lines, monitors, and portable firefighting equipment with precision and efficiency.
- Maintain all firefighting and rescue equipment in optimal working condition, reporting any defects and supporting preventive maintenance activities.
- Inspect, clean, test, and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and SCBA to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Restore vehicles and emergency equipment to operational readiness following incidents, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum preparedness.
- Fire Prevention & Safety:
- Conduct comprehensive fire prevention inspections of buildings, workshops, warehouses, fuel facilities, and underground operations to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Support the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire hydrants, hose reels, portable fire extinguishers, and fire protection systems to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Identify fire hazards and recommend corrective actions to enhance workplace safety and prevent incidents.
- Support fire impairment management and emergency planning activities to ensure a proactive approach to risk mitigation.
- Participate in MBCC’s Journey to Zero safety program, identifying hazards and supporting corrective actions to foster a culture of safety excellence.
- Emergency Training & Preparedness:
- Participate in emergency drills, simulations, and practical firefighting exercises to maintain and enhance your skills and readiness.
- Maintain competency in firefighting, rescue operations, SCBA usage, first aid, HazMat response, and emergency response techniques through continuous training and professional development.
- Assist in delivering fire safety awareness sessions to employees and contractors, promoting a proactive safety culture across the organization.
- Participate in emergency response planning, site familiarization, and pre-incident planning to ensure preparedness for potential emergencies.
- Incident Reporting & Communication:
- Complete incident reports, equipment inspection records, and training documentation accurately and on time to maintain compliance with regulatory and company standards.
- Maintain effective communication with Incident Command, Control Room, Security, Medical Team, and Operations to ensure coordinated and efficient emergency response.
- Adhere to Emergency Response Team Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Incident Command System (ICS) requirements to ensure consistency and effectiveness in emergency operations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with Mining, Process Plant, Maintenance, Security, Medical, and other departments during emergency response operations to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to safety.
- Support emergency response contractors and mutual aid agencies when required, fostering strong partnerships to enhance emergency preparedness.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that enhance emergency preparedness, operational readiness, and overall workplace safety.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for this critical role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a High School Certificate or equivalent as a minimum requirement; a Diploma in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field is highly preferred.
- Possess Firefighter I & II qualification or an equivalent industrial firefighting certification, demonstrating your expertise in firefighting and emergency response.
- Hold a valid driver’s license to ensure mobility and readiness for emergency response operations.
- Maintain current First Aid / Basic Life Support (BLS) certification to provide immediate medical assistance during emergencies.
- Meet medical and physical fitness standards to perform the demanding duties of a firefighter, including the ability to work in high-risk environments and respond to emergencies with agility and endurance.
