NHS Borders is committed to fostering a culture of compassion, kindness, integrity, teamwork, and excellence, and we are excited to offer an exceptional opportunity for a Registered Nurse or Midwife to embark on a rewarding journey as a Trainee Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) – Health Visiting. This fixed-term, 12-month training position is exclusively open to current NHS Scotland employees and provides a unique pathway to specialise in health visiting, supporting families and children aged 0–5 to achieve optimal health and wellbeing outcomes.

Your Role as a Trainee Health Visitor

As a Trainee SCPHN (Health Visitor), you will play a pivotal role in delivering the Universal Health Visiting Pathway in Scotland. Your responsibilities will include:

• Academic and Practical Training: Undertake an NMC-approved postgraduate SCPHN (Health Visiting) programme in collaboration with Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, while gaining hands-on experience in real-world settings.
• Pathway Delivery: Develop expertise in delivering universal, targeted, and additional pathway visits, ensuring families receive tailored support to meet their unique needs.
• Assessment and Safeguarding: Learn to assess child and family needs using the GIRFEC National Practice Model, while gaining experience in safeguarding and child protection processes to promote safety and wellbeing.
• Health Promotion and Early Intervention: Lead health promotion initiatives and early intervention strategies within communities to foster positive outcomes in early years development, parenting, and school readiness.
• Collaborative Practice: Work closely with experienced Health Visitors and multidisciplinary teams to enhance your skills and contribute to improving health outcomes for children and families.

Essential Criteria for Success

To excel in this role, you will need:

• A current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse or Midwife.
• A demonstrated passion for public health, early years development, and family support.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to build trust and rapport with families from diverse backgrounds.
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic healthcare environment.
• A commitment to pursuing postgraduate academic study and engaging in continuous professional development.

Training Commitment and Progression

This training post requires a balance of academic study and supervised clinical practice. As a Trainee covered by Annex 21, your salary will be structured as follows:

• Up to 12 months prior to completion: 75% of the pay band maximum for the fully qualified rate.
• More than 1 but less than 2 years prior to completion: 70% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
• More than 2 but less than 3 years prior to completion: 65% of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
• More than 3 years prior to completion: 60% of the pay band maximum for the fully qualified rate.
