Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Blood Bank Specialist II to join our esteemed healthcare team. Key Responsibilities

The Blood Bank Specialist II will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

• Blood Collection and Processing: Oversee the collection of blood donations, ensuring adherence to strict safety and hygiene protocols. Perform processing tasks such as centrifugation, component separation, and labeling to prepare blood products for storage or distribution.
• Testing and Quality Control: Conduct comprehensive serological and molecular testing on blood samples to detect infectious diseases and ensure compatibility. Maintain rigorous quality control measures to guarantee the integrity and safety of all blood products.
• Inventory Management: Monitor and manage blood inventory levels, ensuring optimal stock levels to meet patient demand while minimizing waste. Implement efficient storage and rotation practices to maintain product viability.
• Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of federal, state, and local regulations governing blood banking operations, including FDA, AABB, and CAP standards. Ensure all procedures and documentation comply with these requirements to maintain accreditation and certification.
• Technical Expertise: Operate and maintain advanced laboratory equipment, including automated analyzers, refrigerators, and freezers. Troubleshoot technical issues and perform routine maintenance to ensure uninterrupted operations.
• Collaboration and Training: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate timely and accurate blood transfusions. Provide training and guidance to junior staff members and students on blood bank procedures and safety protocols.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all blood bank activities, including donations, testing results, inventory transactions, and adverse events. Generate reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders as required.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, candidates must possess the following qualifications and competencies:

• Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field is required. A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) certification is highly preferred.
• Experience: A minimum of three to five years of experience in a blood bank or transfusion medicine laboratory is essential. Prior supervisory or leadership experience is a plus.
• Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of blood banking procedures, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, and component preparation. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) is beneficial.
• Certifications: Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an equivalent credential is desirable.
• Soft Skills: Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. A high level of integrity, attention to detail, and a commitment to patient safety.
