Position Overview

Key Responsibilities

• Blood Product Management: Oversee the collection, processing, storage, and distribution of blood and blood components, ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines and institutional protocols.
• Testing and Screening: Perform and supervise comprehensive serological and molecular testing to determine blood group compatibility, detect infectious diseases, and ensure the safety of blood products.
• Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain rigorous quality control measures to guarantee the integrity and viability of blood products throughout their lifecycle, from donation to transfusion.
• Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of evolving industry regulations, including those set by the FDA, AABB, and other governing bodies, and ensure full compliance in all operational procedures.
• Technical Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the blood bank team.
• Emergency Response: Act as a key responder during critical situations, such as mass casualty events or blood shortages, to rapidly mobilize and distribute blood products as needed.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all blood bank activities, including inventory levels, testing results, and transfusion outcomes, in compliance with legal and organizational requirements.
• Collaboration: Work closely with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and laboratory staff, to ensure seamless integration of blood bank services into patient care pathways.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree or specialized certification (e.g., Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) from the American Association of Blood Banks) is highly desirable.
• Certification: Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by a recognized board, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), is mandatory. Additional certifications in blood banking are preferred.
• Experience: A minimum of three to five years of progressive experience in a blood bank or transfusion service setting, with at least two years in a supervisory or specialist role.
• Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of blood banking procedures, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, and component preparation. Familiarity with automated and manual testing systems is essential.
• Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities to interpret complex test results, troubleshoot technical issues, and make critical decisions under pressure.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey technical information to diverse stakeholders, including non-technical staff and regulatory authorities.
• Attention to Detail: A meticulous approach to ensure accuracy in all aspects of blood bank operations, from sample handling to final product release.
• Ethical Standards: A commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards, including patient confidentiality and the responsible use of blood products.
