Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Blood Bank Specialist II to join our esteemed healthcare team. Key Responsibilities

  • Blood Product Management: Oversee the collection, processing, testing, storage, and distribution of blood and blood components, ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines and institutional protocols. This includes performing compatibility testing, crossmatching, and antibody screening to prevent adverse transfusion reactions.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Implement and maintain rigorous quality control measures to uphold the integrity of blood products. Conduct regular audits, document all procedures meticulously, and ensure compliance with standards set by organizations such as the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks), FDA, and other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Technical Expertise: Operate and maintain advanced laboratory equipment, including automated analyzers, refrigerators, freezers, and apheresis machines. Troubleshoot technical issues, perform routine maintenance, and validate new testing methodologies to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Donor Screening and Counseling: Collaborate with donor centers to screen potential blood donors for eligibility, ensuring the safety and suitability of collected blood. Provide clear and empathetic communication to donors regarding the donation process, results, and any deferrals, maintaining a positive donor experience.
  • Transfusion Support: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide timely and accurate transfusion services. Interpret test results, resolve compatibility issues, and assist in the selection of appropriate blood products for patients with complex medical needs, such as those requiring rare blood types or multiple transfusions.
  • Training and Mentorship: Serve as a resource for junior staff and trainees, providing guidance on best practices, laboratory techniques, and regulatory requirements. Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the blood bank team.
  • Emergency Response: Participate in emergency preparedness plans, including mass casualty events or blood shortages. Develop and execute contingency strategies to ensure an uninterrupted supply of blood products during critical situations.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree or specialized certification (e.g., Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology) is highly desirable.
  • Certification: Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by a recognized national board (e.g., ASCP, AMT). Blood banking certification (e.g., SBB) is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in a blood bank or transfusion service laboratory, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or specialist role. Experience in a hospital-based blood bank or reference laboratory is advantageous.
  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with automated and manual blood banking techniques, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody identification, and crossmatching. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of federal, state, and accreditation regulations governing blood banking, including FDA 21 CFR Part 640, AABB Standards, and CLIA requirements.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and donors.
