Key Responsibilities

• Blood Collection and Processing: Oversee and perform blood collection procedures, including donor screening, phlebotomy, and apheresis, while adhering to strict regulatory guidelines. Ensure proper labeling, processing, and separation of blood components such as red cells, plasma, and platelets.
• Quality Assurance and Compliance: Maintain meticulous records and documentation to comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including FDA, AABB, and CAP standards. Conduct routine quality control checks on equipment, reagents, and blood products to guarantee accuracy and safety.
• Inventory Management: Monitor and manage blood product inventory to prevent shortages or wastage. Utilize advanced inventory systems to track expiration dates, allocate resources efficiently, and coordinate with clinical departments to meet patient demand.
• Testing and Analysis: Perform serological and molecular testing to determine blood type, screen for infectious diseases, and resolve compatibility issues. Interpret test results accurately and take appropriate actions to ensure the suitability of blood products for transfusion.
• Technical Leadership and Training: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff and interns, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. Stay current with advancements in blood banking technology and methodologies to enhance operational efficiency and patient outcomes.
• Emergency Response: Respond promptly to urgent requests for blood products during emergencies, trauma cases, or surgical procedures. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely delivery and administration of life-saving transfusions.
• Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and laboratory personnel, to facilitate seamless coordination in blood product utilization. Communicate effectively with donors, patients, and regulatory bodies to address inquiries and resolve issues.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, you must possess a strong foundation in blood banking principles, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence. The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
• Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an equivalent credential.
• Minimum of three years of experience in a blood bank or transfusion service setting, with progressive responsibility in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
• In-depth knowledge of immunohematology, transfusion medicine, and regulatory compliance standards.
• Proficiency in using laboratory information systems (LIS) and blood bank software for data management and reporting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a customer-focused approach to donor and patient interactions.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support 24/7 blood bank operations.
