Medical Planner

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Planner to lead the strategic development of healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and specialized medical centers. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for translating complex clinical workflows into efficient, patient-centered, and code-compliant designs that enhance operational excellence and patient safety. Your expertise will be instrumental in shaping functional layouts for critical departments such as Operating Rooms (OR), Intensive Care Units (ICU), Imaging, Emergency Departments, Outpatient Clinics, Inpatient Units, Laboratories, and Administrative Areas. This position requires a deep understanding of healthcare design standards, regulatory compliance, and collaborative project execution across all phases of development.

Key Responsibilities

The Medical Planner will play a central role in the following areas:

• Medical Space Programming and Planning: Develop comprehensive space programs, adjacency diagrams, room data sheets, and departmental planning documentation to ensure optimal functionality and efficiency in healthcare facility layouts.
• Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with clinicians, hospital administrators, architects, engineers, and consultants to integrate clinical workflows into design solutions that prioritize patient care, operational efficiency, and future scalability.
• Regulatory Compliance and Standards: Ensure all designs adhere to stringent healthcare design standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements, including NFPA, ADA, JCIA, and local healthcare regulations. Conduct thorough reviews of architectural and engineering drawings to maintain alignment with these standards.
• Medical Equipment Integration: Coordinate medical equipment planning with architectural, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing), and engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and operational readiness.
• Project Lifecycle Engagement: Participate in all project phases, from initial concept design through schematic design, detailed design, construction documentation, site coordination, and commissioning. Provide ongoing support during design reviews, technical workshops, and client presentations.
• Operational Optimization: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance healthcare facility functionality, patient safety, and operational efficiency while ensuring designs accommodate future flexibility and adaptability.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Healthcare Design, or a related field is required. A Master’s Degree in Architecture, Healthcare Planning, Healthcare Administration, or a related discipline is highly preferred.
• Certification and Training: Professional certification or specialized training in healthcare facility planning or design guidelines is a valuable asset.
• Experience: A minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in healthcare planning, hospital architecture, or medical facility design, with a proven track record in space programming and planning for hospitals, medical centers, and healthcare facilities.
• Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office applications is essential. Experience with Smartsheet and familiarity with medical equipment planning software and data-driven space planning tools are advantageous.
• Knowledge and Skills: A strong understanding of healthcare design standards, including NFPA 99, ADA, JCIA, and applicable local healthcare regulations. Ability to interpret clinical workflows and develop efficient, code-compliant layouts. Familiarity with healthcare MEP coordination, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements is critical.
• Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, presentation, and multidisciplinary coordination skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and clients.
