Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Structural Engineer to join our team in the Marshall Islands, providing critical engineering support under the LOGCAP program. This role is pivotal in ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and mission readiness of facilities, infrastructure, and waterfront structures for U.S. Army Public Works operations. The Structural Engineer will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of engineering projects, from initial design and analysis to inspection, certification, and sustainment. This position requires expertise in structural engineering principles, a deep understanding of corrosion-prone environments, and the ability to deliver solutions that align with Army standards and lifecycle asset management objectives.
Key Responsibilities
The Structural Engineer will perform a wide range of duties to support the structural integrity and operational readiness of critical infrastructure. Responsibilities include:
- Structural Assessments: Conduct thorough evaluations of facilities, piers, foundations, roofs, and load-bearing systems to identify structural deficiencies and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Engineering Design and Analysis: Develop detailed engineering designs, perform structural analysis, and prepare cost estimates and repair recommendations to address structural challenges in a high-corrosion, remote environment.
- Review and Compliance: Review shop drawings, submittals, and contractor work to ensure adherence to project specifications, codes, and Army standards. Provide stamped engineering reports as required.
- Field Inspections: Perform field inspections to assess structural conditions, identify risks, and recommend mitigation strategies. Document findings and provide actionable insights for sustainment and repair programs.
- Project Support: Collaborate with civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers on integrated projects, providing technical guidance during planning, design, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Corrosion and Environmental Impact Evaluation: Assess the effects of corrosion, fatigue, and environmental factors on structural systems, developing solutions to extend asset lifecycles in challenging conditions.
- Risk and Safety Reviews: Support risk assessments and safety reviews for critical infrastructure, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and mission objectives.
- Documentation and Asset Management: Maintain accurate engineering documentation, asset records, and lifecycle management data to support decision-making and regulatory reporting.
- Technical Guidance: Provide expert technical guidance to construction teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of projects and adherence to engineering best practices.
Qualifications and Requirements
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications and possess the necessary experience:
- Education and Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required.
- One year of related experience may substitute for one year of education, if a degree is required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of structural design and inspection experience.
- Proven expertise in reinforced concrete, steel structures, and foundation systems.
- Experience in corrosion-prone or coastal environments is highly preferred.
- Waterfront or pier structural experience is a strong asset.
- Remote site or expeditionary engineering experience is desirable.
- Construction oversight experience and familiarity with asset management or sustainment engineering are beneficial.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in structural analysis, engineering judgment, and risk evaluation.
- Strong technical writing and reporting skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise documentation.
- Excellent project coordination and communication abilities to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of safety and regulatory compliance standards.
- Additional Requirements:
- Must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License.
- Eligibility for a Common Access Card (CAC) or ability to obtain one.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any required security clearance.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
This position is based in the Marshall Islands and involves working in extreme environmental conditions. The Structural Engineer must be capable of performing duties in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with average summer temperatures reaching up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The role requires working both indoors and outdoors in harsh, tropical conditions, including exposure to high heat, humidity, and potential hazards such as moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, and elevated work areas. The position involves light physical exertion, with the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and perform tasks in various industrial and outdoor settings. The engineer must be prepared to work in proximity to moving vehicles, scaffolding, and high places, with appropriate safety measures in place.
