Key Responsibilities

As a Rolling Stock Engineer, your responsibilities will span a broad spectrum of technical, analytical, and project management duties. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions while adhering to stringent industry standards and client requirements. Your role will include:

• Technical Leadership and Advisory Support: Provide specialized expertise to the Lead Rolling Stock Engineer and broader project teams, offering critical insights into rolling stock design, performance, and compliance. Act as a trusted advisor to ensure technical excellence throughout the project lifecycle.
• Interface Specification Development: Define and refine interface specifications to facilitate seamless integration between rolling stock systems and supplier designs, ensuring compatibility and operational efficiency.
• Project Coordination and Monitoring: Work closely with project controls teams to establish realistic schedules, track design progress, and ensure adherence to key project milestones. Monitor and report on the alignment of deliverables with critical parameters—safety, quality, cost, and schedule.
• RAMS and Operational Analysis: Conduct rigorous analyses of rolling stock reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) performance to ensure alignment with client specifications. Evaluate operational and maintenance strategies to optimize long-term performance and cost-effectiveness.
• Design Review and Compliance: Lead the review and approval of design submissions from Design Build contractors, ensuring full compliance with client requirements, industry standards, and regulatory frameworks. Oversee the evaluation of subsystem designs, including HVAC systems, door controls, propulsion and control mechanisms, auxiliary power, wiring, automatic train control (ATS), carbody structures, braking systems, couplers, gangways, and bogies.
• Technical Investigations and Fault Analysis: Investigate technical issues, conduct fault analyses, and propose actionable solutions to resolve challenges in rolling stock design and performance. Your problem-solving skills will be instrumental in maintaining project integrity and operational reliability.
• Site Inspections and Quality Assurance: Conduct on-site visits and inspections to verify the quality of rolling stock works, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to project standards. Your firsthand oversight will help mitigate risks and enhance overall project delivery.
• Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of rolling stock-related data, ensuring all reporting requirements are met with precision and clarity. Your attention to detail will support transparency and accountability across the project.
• Cross-Disciplinary Coordination: Facilitate collaboration between rolling stock systems and other critical disciplines, such as platform screen doors, signaling, telecommunications, and power supply systems. Ensure seamless integration and harmonization of interfaces to deliver a cohesive and high-performance railway solution.

Qualifications and Experience

To excel in this position, you must possess a robust technical background and a proven track record in the rail industry. We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

• Education: A degree, diploma, or professional qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Experience: Minimum of 12 years of hands-on experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong focus on the design and delivery of rolling stock systems. Experience working on large, complex, and multidisciplinary projects is essential.
• Industry Expertise: Current or recent knowledge of the rail industry, with a deep understanding of railway approvals, practices, and standards. Familiarity with critical standards such as EN 50126, EN 50129, IEC 61133, IEC 61287, NFPA 130, UIC 615, UIC 515, EN 12663, and EN 15827 is highly valued.
• Technical Specialization: Significant experience in the design of rolling stock, including railway interiors, paneling, and systems such as HVAC, propulsion, braking, and control mechanisms. Experience with Bombardier’s or Siemens rolling stock is a distinct advantage.
• Certification: Chartered Engineer status is preferred but not mandatory for highly qualified candidates.
• Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of rail communication concepts, overhead traction power reticulation systems, and the broader railway infrastructure.
• Client-Facing Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with clients, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams. Excellent written and verbal English skills are essential for clear and impactful communication.
