Data Center Engineer

Core Responsibilities

The Data Center Engineer will play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity and performance of our data center facilities. Key responsibilities include:

• Hardware Deployment and Maintenance:
  • Unbox, rack, stack, and cable servers, switches, routers, and other critical network and security devices.
  • Perform component diagnostics to identify and replace failing hardware, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum efficiency.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of servers, storage systems, network infrastructure, and security devices to support seamless operations.
• Electrical System Management:
  • Monitor and maintain power distribution units (PDUs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and branch circuits to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of diesel generators (DG) and distribution panels to guarantee operational readiness during power outages.
  • Collaborate with external electrical contractors during high-risk maintenance activities, providing supervision and guidance to ensure safety and compliance.
• Cooling and Environmental Control:
  • Monitor and optimize computer room air conditioning (CRAC/CRAH) units to maintain optimal temperature and humidity levels.
  • Ensure the integrity of hot/cold aisle containment systems to enhance energy efficiency and prevent thermal issues.
  • Work closely with HVAC contractors to oversee maintenance and upgrades, ensuring alignment with operational requirements.
• Safety and Compliance:
  • Inspect and maintain fire suppression systems, including FM200, Inergen, and Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus (VESDA), to ensure rapid response in case of emergencies.
  • Monitor water leak detection systems and fire alarm systems to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Respond immediately to environmental, power, or thermal alerts to prevent thermal runaway and minimize potential disruptions.
• Operating System and Incident Management:
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot Windows and Linux server operating systems to maintain system stability and performance.
  • Lead incident response efforts to address critical issues, including power failures, cooling inefficiencies, or security breaches, with a focus on rapid resolution.
• Inventory and Asset Lifecycle Management:
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and prepare lifecycle assessments for critical assets to support strategic planning and budgeting.
• Passive Cabling and Network Infrastructure:
  • Demonstrate expertise in passive cabling, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of CAT 6 and fiber optic cables.
  • Support failover testing and participate in data center disaster recovery (DC/DR) drills to ensure business continuity and resilience.
• Vendor and OEM Coordination:
  • Liaise with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to address technical issues, coordinate repairs, and ensure timely resolution of hardware-related challenges.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, candidates must possess the following qualifications and competencies:

• Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in data center operations, with a strong focus on hardware deployment, electrical systems, and cooling management.
  • Proven expertise in troubleshooting Windows and Linux server environments.
• Technical Proficiency:
  • In-depth knowledge of servers, storage systems, network infrastructure, and security devices.
  • Familiarity with passive cabling standards, including CAT 6 and fiber optic installations.
  • Experience with failover testing and disaster recovery planning.
• Soft Skills:
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external vendors.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond to critical incidents with a focus on minimizing downtime.
• Certifications (Preferred):
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+ certifications.
  • Data Center Infrastructure Specialist (CDCS) or similar certifications.
  • Certifications in electrical safety, fire suppression systems, or HVAC management.
