CNS/ATM - Automation & Surveillance Engineer

Job Purpose

The Automation & Surveillance Engineer plays a pivotal role in the design, testing, validation, and continuous support of Automation and Surveillance systems within the CNS/ATM domain. This position ensures that all technical activities align with regulatory standards, industry best practices, and predefined KPIs, while adhering to established budgets, policies, and procedures. The role demands a proactive approach to system engineering, compliance management, and stakeholder coordination to deliver high-performance solutions that meet operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Sales Activities

• Technical Proposals: Develop and oversee the creation of comprehensive technical proposals for Automation and Surveillance systems in response to client RFPs. Ensure proposals meet regulatory and operational standards, including detailed system design concepts, performance specifications, and compliance with aviation industry benchmarks such as ICAO and EUROCONTROL guidelines.
• Project Management & Coordination: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical proposals with client expectations, project timelines, and budget constraints. Provide strategic input to enhance proposal competitiveness while maintaining technical integrity.

System Design, Implementation, and Validation

• System Design and Implementation: Contribute to the end-to-end design and implementation of Automation and Surveillance systems, ensuring alignment with operational, safety, and regulatory requirements. Work closely with engineering teams to develop robust system architectures that support air traffic management objectives.
• System Testing and Validation: Lead rigorous testing and validation processes to verify system performance against design requirements and regulatory standards. Facilitate smooth transitions to operational use, including shadow mode testing and full deployment activities, to ensure seamless integration and minimal disruption.
• Regulatory Compliance: Maintain continuous oversight of Automation and Surveillance systems to ensure adherence to ICAO, FAA, and other aviation industry regulations. Conduct regular technical assessments and implement necessary adjustments to uphold compliance and mitigate risks.

Quality Assurance and System Commissioning

• Quality Assurance: Assist in the development and execution of quality assurance processes to validate that systems meet all specified technical and operational requirements. Identify and address potential issues proactively to ensure high reliability and performance.
• System Commissioning: Participate in the commissioning of new systems, providing technical oversight to ensure successful implementation and integration. Verify that all deliverables meet client expectations and industry standards before handover.

Project Planning and Development Management

• Project Planning: Develop detailed project schedules, defining key milestones, task assignments, and resource allocation to ensure timely project delivery. Monitor progress and adjust plans as needed to address challenges and maintain alignment with project objectives.
• Development Management: Drive the continuous improvement of Automation and Surveillance systems, implementing enhancements to meet evolving operational, safety, and regulatory standards. Lead design reviews (SDR, PDR, CDR) to validate technical and operational feasibility.

System Integration and Compliance

• System Integration: Lead the integration of Automation and Surveillance systems with existing and future infrastructure, collaborating with internal departments and external entities to ensure technical compatibility and seamless operation. Address interoperability challenges to support cohesive air traffic management ecosystems.
• Compliance with Industry Standards: Stay abreast of updates to ICAO, FAA, and other relevant regulations, ensuring all engineering activities comply with safety-critical standards in air traffic management. Apply this knowledge to guide system design, testing, and deployment phases.
• Engineering Assessments: Support the evaluation of air traffic service (ATS) procedure changes and airspace structure adjustments, analyzing their impact on existing and future Automation and Surveillance systems. Provide data-driven recommendations to optimize system performance and compliance.

Stakeholder Management

• Internal Stakeholder Coordination: Facilitate effective communication and collaboration with internal stakeholders, including technical, financial, and legal teams, to gather critical information and secure necessary approvals for bid submissions and project execution.
• Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with other engineering departments to align project deliverables with client specifications, technical standards, and organizational goals. Ensure seamless integration of Automation and Surveillance systems within broader CNS/ATM initiatives.
• Vendor and Contractor Coordination: Engage with vendors and contractors to develop RFPs, evaluate proposals, and oversee the technical execution of contracts. Ensure external activities align with project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Performance and Reporting

• Reporting: Provide regular updates to the Automation & Surveillance Manager on project status, technical challenges, and proposed solutions. Maintain transparent communication to support informed decision-making and risk mitigation.
• Technical Support and Consultation: Offer expert technical guidance and consultation to internal and external stakeholders, addressing complex issues related to Automation and Surveillance systems. Serve as a trusted advisor to enhance system reliability, efficiency, and compliance.
