Position Overview
The Registrar – Nephrology is a physician in specialty training responsible for delivering comprehensive nephrology care through virtual platforms. This role focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic kidney diseases, ensuring safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care under the supervision of a consultant. The position supports continuity of care, chronic disease management, and seamless coordination with multidisciplinary teams while leveraging telehealth technologies to enhance accessibility and efficiency in healthcare delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Virtual Patient Consultations and Clinical Management
As a Registrar in Nephrology, you will conduct video and phone consultations to evaluate and manage patients with nephrology-related conditions. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assessing and managing chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension, electrolyte disorders, proteinuria, haematuria, nephrolithiasis, and post-AKI follow-up;
- Reviewing laboratory results and imaging remotely to adjust management plans accordingly;
- Identifying red flags that require urgent in-person assessment or hospital referral;
- Developing individualized treatment and monitoring plans in collaboration with consultants;
- Ensuring accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR);
- Arranging virtual follow-ups and coordinating care with primary care providers.
Chronic Disease Management and Continuity of Care
You will play a pivotal role in monitoring CKD progression, providing virtual counseling on lifestyle modifications, and supporting patients with conditions such as anaemia of CKD, CKD-MBD, and blood pressure management. Additional responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with dietitians and allied health professionals via telehealth platforms;
- Coordinating dialysis preparation education and timely referrals when indicated;
- Monitoring CKD progression using laboratory trends and patient-reported outcomes;
- Providing guidance on diet, fluid balance, and medication adherence.
Quality Assurance, Patient Safety, and Compliance
Adherence to clinical guidelines, telemedicine regulations, and ethical standards is paramount. You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring safe prescribing practices, including dose adjustments in renal impairment;
- Monitoring and counseling patients regarding medication side effects and warning signs;
- Reporting patient safety concerns and adverse events to the Quality Department;
- Participating in virtual audits, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical reviews.
Telehealth Platform Proficiency and Digital Care Delivery
Proficiency in telehealth technologies is essential to deliver high-quality care. Your duties will include:
- Utilizing telemedicine platforms for video consultations, secure messaging, and lab result reviews;
- Maintaining accurate, complete, and confidential digital patient records;
- Optimizing the use of remote monitoring data, such as home blood pressure readings;
- Participating in telehealth training and collaborating with IT support for system optimization.
Patient Experience and Satisfaction
Delivering an exceptional patient experience is a core focus of this role. You will:
- Communicate diagnoses and management plans clearly and empathetically;
- Provide education on kidney disease progression, treatment options, and red-flag symptoms;
- Address patient concerns and follow-up questions promptly via telehealth channels;
- Encourage adherence to treatment plans and follow-up schedules.
Multidisciplinary and Consultant Collaboration
Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team is essential to ensure comprehensive patient care. You will:
- Collaborate virtually with nephrology consultants for case discussions and escalation of care;
- Coordinate care with primary care physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and dietitians;
- Participate in multidisciplinary virtual meetings and care planning.
Professional Development and Teaching
Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth is expected. Your responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge in nephrology through CME, workshops, and conferences;
- Participating in case discussions and academic activities;
- Supporting the teaching and supervision of junior doctors when required.
Qualifications and Skills
To qualify for this role, you must possess the following:
- A medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from an accredited institution;
- Completion of Internal Medicine residency from an accredited program;
- Nephrology training/fellowship (in progress or completed);
- Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) classification and registration as Registrar – Nephrology;
- Strong clinical judgment with expertise in CKD and renal pharmacology;
- Experience or a strong interest in telemedicine-based care;
- Proficiency in EMR systems and telehealth platforms;
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills;
- Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and continuous professional development.
