Position Overview
The Cost Accountant plays a pivotal role in the financial health and strategic decision-making of our organization by designing, maintaining, and enhancing the cost accounting framework. This position is instrumental in delivering precise cost data that empowers leadership to make informed pricing decisions, develop robust budgets, conduct profitability analyses, and maintain stringent financial controls. By meticulously tracking and analyzing direct materials, labor, and overhead expenses, the Cost Accountant ensures accurate unit cost calculations, identifies cost variances, and drives initiatives to optimize resource utilization. The role is essential in safeguarding inventory valuation, supporting cost reduction strategies, and ensuring full compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and internal policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Accuracy & Recording: Capture and allocate materials, labor, and overhead costs with precision to appropriate cost centers and products, minimizing errors and adjustments to maintain data integrity.
- Standard Costing & Variance Control: Develop and update standard costs in a timely manner, conduct variance analysis against actual costs, and provide clear explanations and actionable recommendations for discrepancies.
- Inventory Valuation: Ensure accurate valuation of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods through precise periodic stock counts and reconciliations, supporting financial reporting accuracy.
- Cost Reporting: Generate and deliver accurate, timely cost reports on a monthly or quarterly basis to meet the decision-making requirements of management, ensuring transparency and reliability.
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Actively contribute to the budgeting process and monitor actual expenditures against approved budgets, proactively identifying and escalating deviations to prevent cost overruns.
- Profitability Analysis: Perform detailed analyses of product, department, and cost-center profitability to inform pricing strategies, margin optimization, and resource allocation decisions.
- Cost Optimization: Lead initiatives to identify and implement cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements across operational processes, enhancing overall financial performance.
- Compliance & Controls: Ensure strict adherence to IFRS, internal accounting policies, and cost-control procedures, maintaining a robust control environment to mitigate audit risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with production, procurement, and warehouse teams to secure accurate and timely cost data, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Performance Metrics
The success of the Cost Accountant will be measured through the following key performance indicators, which align with the organization’s financial and operational objectives:
- Cost Reporting Timeliness: 100% of cost reports submitted by the agreed deadline to support timely decision-making.
- Costing Accuracy: Maintain an error/adjustment rate in cost entries and allocations at or below 1–2% to ensure data reliability.
- Variance Analysis: Keep cost variances within approved tolerance levels (e.g., actual vs. standard within ±5%) and provide comprehensive explanations for all material variances.
- Month-End Close Efficiency: Complete the cost closing process within the targeted number of days following the period-end to facilitate accurate financial reporting.
- Inventory Accuracy: Achieve a stock count accuracy of 98% or higher through rigorous cycle-counting and reconciliation processes.
- Budget Adherence: Ensure actual costs remain within approved budget limits, with deviations identified and addressed before period close.
- Cost Savings Realized: Deliver measurable cost-reduction opportunities, quantified in SAR or as a percentage of the cost base, to drive operational efficiency.
- Reconciliation Accuracy: Maintain a high percentage of cost-to-general ledger reconciliations with no unexplained differences to uphold financial integrity.
- Audit & Compliance: Achieve zero material audit findings related to costing practices, demonstrating full compliance with IFRS and internal policies.
- Data Turnaround: Provide cost data and analysis to management or other departments with minimal delay, ensuring responsiveness to business needs.
Stakeholder Engagement
The Cost Accountant will interact with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure the integrity and utility of cost accounting data. Internally, the role collaborates closely with the Finance Team, Financial Planning & Analysis, Procurement, Production/Operations, Warehouse and Inventory Teams, Internal Audit, and Brands/Department General Managers to gather, validate, and report cost information. Externally, the position engages with vendors and suppliers to verify cost data and coordinates with external auditors to ensure compliance and transparency. This cross-functional engagement is critical to maintaining a cohesive and effective cost accounting framework.
Qualifications & Requirements
Candidates for this role must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, complemented by a minimum of [X] years of progressive experience in cost accounting or a similar financial role.
