Position Overview
The Head Nurse serves as a pivotal leadership role within the healthcare team, overseeing nursing operations in the assigned ward to ensure alignment with organizational goals, objectives, and established standards. The Head Nurse will be responsible for the strategic management of nursing resources, staff performance, and operational efficiency to deliver high-quality healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Staff Management and Development
The Head Nurse is tasked with the comprehensive management of the nursing team, including the following responsibilities:
- Staffing and Licensing: Develop and revise the annual nursing staffing plan to address the evolving needs of the unit. Ensure all nursing staff maintain valid professional licenses, including registrations from the country of origin and the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCFHS), as well as current life support provider certifications (e.g., BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP).
- Orientation and Integration: Facilitate the onboarding of new nursing staff by providing structured orientation programs, including orientation packages, schedules, and facility-specific training. Ensure new hires are thoroughly acquainted with unit policies, procedures, job duties, scope of service, and standards of practice.
- Performance Evaluation and Feedback: Conduct regular performance evaluations of nursing staff in accordance with their job descriptions. Assess competencies on an ongoing basis, provide constructive feedback, and support staff development initiatives to enhance job satisfaction and professional growth.
- Training and Education: Plan, conduct, and schedule timely in-service training sessions to ensure staff are proficient in their roles. Recommend and coordinate participation in established programs such as competency-based orientation, preceptorship, charge nurse training, cross-training, and student nurse training. Assign staff to attend continuing medical education (CME) courses with accredited hours as required by the SCFHS.
- Disciplinary Actions and Recognition: Implement disciplinary procedures fairly and consistently when necessary. Recommend staff recognition, bonuses, transfers, promotions, contract renewals, or terminations based on performance and organizational needs.
2. Unit Work Schedule and Staff Coverage
The Head Nurse is responsible for ensuring optimal staffing levels and coverage to maintain high standards of patient care across all shifts:
- Scheduling and Rota Management: Prepare and revise monthly duty rosters, taking into account staff vacation requests and ensuring adequate unit coverage. Develop an annual vacation plan that balances staff availability with operational demands. Submit the monthly rota to the Director of Nursing (DON) for approval and ensure it is accessible to all nursing staff.
- On-Call and Overtime Management: Arrange on-call schedules and request overtime or extra duty staffing as needed to meet patient care demands. Monitor absenteeism and report trends to the immediate Nursing Manager to address staffing gaps proactively.
- 24/7 Patient Care Coverage: Ensure that qualified nursing staff are available to provide continuous patient care, including bedside nursing services, across all shifts and seven days a week. Coordinate staff schedules to align with patient needs and unit priorities.
3. Operational Management and Strategic Leadership
The Head Nurse plays a critical role in shaping the operational and strategic direction of the nursing unit:
- Strategic Planning: Participate in the development and implementation of the Nursing Department’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the hospital’s broader strategic objectives. Contribute to the creation, maintenance, and periodic updating of departmental and unit policies, procedures, objectives, and philosophies.
- Scope of Service and Standards: Develop and update the unit’s Scope of Service and Standards of Practice every three years. Ensure staff are informed of any new procedures, policies, or changes to existing protocols to maintain compliance and high standards of care.
- Communication and Collaboration: Maintain effective and therapeutic communication with all members of the healthcare team to foster a collaborative and supportive work environment. Serve as a liaison between nursing staff, management, and other departments to ensure seamless operations and alignment with organizational goals.
4. Quality Assurance and Compliance
The Head Nurse is responsible for upholding the highest standards of patient care and regulatory compliance:
- Ensure nursing services are delivered in accordance with staff qualifications, specialty, and the unit’s scope of service.
- Monitor compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements to maintain accreditation and quality standards.
- Address any issues or concerns related to patient care, staff performance, or operational efficiency promptly and effectively.
Qualifications and Competencies
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or a related field, along with a valid nursing license. A minimum of five years of progressive nursing experience, including at least two years in a leadership or supervisory role, is required. Certification in life support (e.g., BLS, ACLS) and a strong understanding of healthcare regulations and best practices are essential. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills are critical to success in this role.
