Infection Control Specialist

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Infection Control Specialist to join our healthcare team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Program to safeguard patients, visitors, and healthcare personnel from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with organizational policies, national regulations, and international accreditation standards, including those set by the Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI) and the Joint Commission International (JCI). This position requires a proactive approach to infection surveillance, policy development, staff education, and collaborative problem-solving to maintain the highest standards of patient safety and care quality.

Key Responsibilities

The Infection Control Specialist will play a pivotal role in the following areas:

• Program Implementation and Surveillance: Lead the execution of the organization’s IPC Program, conducting active surveillance of HAIs using standardized definitions and methodologies to identify trends and areas for improvement.
• Data Analysis and Reporting: Collect, analyze, and interpret infection surveillance data to generate comprehensive reports that highlight trends, risks, and compliance gaps. Present findings to the Infection Control Committee and senior leadership on a regular basis.
• Compliance Monitoring: Perform routine audits across clinical and non-clinical departments to ensure adherence to hand hygiene protocols, standard and transmission-based precautions, isolation practices, and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Outbreak Management: Investigate and manage infection outbreaks in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, recommending and implementing corrective and preventive actions to mitigate risks and prevent recurrence.
• Policy Development and Training: Develop, review, and update IPC policies, procedures, and guidelines in alignment with current evidence-based practices. Provide orientation, education, and ongoing training to healthcare workers to foster a culture of infection prevention awareness and accountability.
• Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with Quality, Patient Safety, Nursing, Medical Staff, Laboratory, Environmental Services, Occupational Health, Sterile Processing, and other departments to enhance infection prevention practices and ensure a unified approach to safety.
• Environmental and Waste Management Oversight: Monitor compliance with sterilization, disinfection, environmental cleaning, and medical waste management standards to minimize infection risks and maintain a safe healthcare environment.
• Accreditation and Regulatory Support: Assist in accreditation activities, regulatory inspections, and quality improvement initiatives to ensure the organization meets or exceeds CBAHI, JCI, and other regulatory requirements.
• Emergency Preparedness: Participate in emergency preparedness planning and response efforts, particularly in the event of infectious disease outbreaks, to ensure the organization is prepared to protect staff and patients.
• Ethical and Confidentiality Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and organizational policies in all aspects of the role.

Qualifications and Experience

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, or a closely related healthcare discipline is required.
• Licensure: Current professional license or registration, where applicable, is mandatory.
• Certification: Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) is highly preferred and demonstrates a commitment to excellence in the field.
• Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of clinical or infection prevention and control experience is required. Prior experience in a CBAHI- or JCI-accredited healthcare organization is advantageous.

Required Knowledge and Skills
