Position Overview

The Mix Room Technician is a critical role responsible for the meticulous preparation, mixing, handling, storage, and distribution of automotive paint materials essential to primer, basecoat, and clearcoat operations. This position ensures color precision, batch traceability, material availability, and adherence to OEM quality standards, while strictly complying with automotive Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS), fire safety, and environmental regulations. The Mix Room Technician is instrumental in achieving first-time-right quality, reducing paint defects, and maintaining uninterrupted production flow within the automotive paint shop.

Key Responsibilities

  • Paint Preparation and Mixing: Accurately prepare, mix, and dispense automotive paints, primers, clearcoats, hardeners, and thinners in strict accordance with OEM-approved formulations, standard operating procedures, and production schedules.
  • Quality Control: Monitor and record critical paint parameters, including viscosity, density, temperature, pot life, and shelf life, to ensure consistency and performance.
  • Traceability and Documentation: Ensure proper labeling, batch identification, and full traceability of paint materials and mixes to meet regulatory and quality standards.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate, clean, and perform basic maintenance on Mix Room equipment, such as mixers, agitators, pumps, filters, and dosing systems, to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Material Supply Management: Supply paint materials to automated and manual spray booths in a timely manner to prevent production line stoppages and maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor paint inventory levels, support First-In-First-Out (FIFO) practices, and coordinate with logistics teams to ensure timely material replenishment and minimize waste.
  • Material Inspection and Compliance: Identify, segregate, and report expired, contaminated, or non-conforming paint materials to maintain quality and safety standards.
  • EHS and Safety Compliance: Adhere to all automotive EHS requirements related to flammable materials, hazardous chemicals, explosion prevention, ventilation, and waste management to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Housekeeping and Organization: Maintain high standards of housekeeping (5S) within the Mix Room and associated storage areas to promote efficiency and safety.
  • Collaboration and Troubleshooting: Work closely with Paint Engineers, Quality Assurance, and Production teams to address color deviations, surface defects, or material-related issues, ensuring swift resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Process Improvement: Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on optimizing paint material utilization, reducing costs, and minimizing waste to enhance operational efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma or Technical Certification in Paint Technology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Discipline.
  • 2-4 years of hands-on experience in an automotive paint shop mix room or an equivalent environment within automotive manufacturing.
  • Preferred experience with automated or semi-automated automotive paint systems.
  • Basic computer proficiency for formulation systems, inventory tracking, and documentation purposes.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English; fluency in Arabic is considered an advantage.
  • Physical fitness and capability to work in controlled environments while wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Skills and Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of automotive paint systems, including primer, basecoat, and clearcoat applications.
  • Understanding of solvent-based and water-based automotive paints and their respective properties.
  • Ability to interpret and follow paint formulations, batch sheets, and technical data sheets with precision.
  • Practical experience with paint mixing, dosing, filtering, and agitation systems.
  • Familiarity with paint quality characteristics, such as color shade, metallic effects, and application consistency.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
