Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Doctor, Occupational Health to provide strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight for occupational health and medical services across our remote industrial and mining operations. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing robust occupational health programs, ensuring medical governance, managing health risks, overseeing contractor fitness-for-duty assessments, and fostering employee wellbeing initiatives. Additionally, you will lead emergency preparedness efforts, manage healthcare service providers, and drive continuous improvement in clinical governance and quality assurance. This position requires a doctoral-level qualification in Occupational Health or a related field, combined with extensive experience in industrial or mining environments, to ensure the highest standards of health, safety, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Occupational Health Leadership
As the Company’s primary Occupational Health Advisor and Subject Matter Expert, you will lead the development and implementation of occupational health strategies, policies, and procedures tailored to the unique demands of mining, processing, and industrial operations. Your role will ensure that employees can safely perform the physical, psychological, and cognitive requirements of their roles without compromising their health or the safety of others. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with local, national, and international occupational health regulations, as well as industry best practices, to mitigate risks and promote a culture of safety and accountability.
Occupational Health Programs & Medical Surveillance
- Design, implement, and oversee comprehensive occupational health programs, including medical surveillance for exposures to noise, dust, chemicals, heat stress, ergonomics, and respiratory hazards.
- Lead fitness-for-duty, return-to-work, pre-employment, periodic, and exit medical assessment programs to ensure employees meet the health and safety requirements of their roles.
- Provide expert guidance on work restrictions, accommodations, and employee rehabilitation programs to support both individual and organizational needs.
Health Risk Management & Clinical Governance
You will play a critical role in developing Health Risk Assessments (HRAs) and supporting operational risk management processes. This includes participating in workplace inspections, hazard identification, and risk control programs, as well as conducting thorough investigations of occupational illnesses and industrial accidents to recommend preventive measures. Additionally, you will oversee clinical governance by establishing medical protocols, treatment guidelines, and quality assurance programs to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare services across all clinic locations.
Emergency Preparedness & Healthcare Service Provider Management
- Develop and maintain robust emergency medical response plans to address medical emergencies, chemical exposures, mass casualty incidents, and other site-specific risks.
- Ensure readiness through regular emergency drills and business continuity planning, providing medical leadership during major incidents and crisis situations.
- Manage outsourced healthcare service providers from contract initiation to completion, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations, KPIs, SLAs, and company standards.
- Oversee staffing, recruitment, competency management, and performance of vendor personnel, conducting regular performance reviews, audits, and service evaluations.
Employee Health & Wellbeing & Stakeholder Collaboration
You will lead employee wellness initiatives focused on physical wellbeing, mental health, stress management, and healthy lifestyle promotion. Collaborating closely with Operations, HR, HSE, Procurement, and senior management, you will provide technical advice on occupational health matters, prepare comprehensive reports and dashboards on workforce health performance, and present occupational health trends to stakeholders. Your role will also involve mentoring medical staff and supporting professional development initiatives to foster a culture of operational excellence.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Mandatory: PhD, DrPH, or equivalent doctoral-level qualification in Occupational Health, Medicine, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in occupational health, preferably within industrial, mining, or large-scale operational environments.
- Proven track record in developing and implementing occupational health programs, medical surveillance systems, and emergency response plans.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams across multiple locations.
- In-depth knowledge of local, national, and international occupational health regulations and industry best practices.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a commitment to continuous improvement.
