Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Procurement Consultant – Pharmaceutical Category Management & Strategic Sourcing to join our dynamic team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is a 6-12 month contract role designed to drive excellence in pharmaceutical procurement through innovative category management and strategic sourcing initiatives. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in optimizing procurement spend, strengthening supplier relationships, and ensuring the uninterrupted availability of high-quality pharmaceutical products to support patient care and organizational objectives. This position requires a blend of analytical prowess, commercial acumen, and exceptional stakeholder engagement to deliver measurable value and operational resilience within the healthcare supply chain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Category Management: Develop and implement comprehensive category management strategies for pharmaceutical products, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, regulatory standards, and patient care priorities. Conduct in-depth market analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for cost optimization and supply chain enhancement.
  • End-to-End Sourcing Leadership: Lead the full lifecycle of strategic sourcing initiatives, including supplier identification, evaluation, tender management, and contract negotiations. Provide data-driven recommendations for supplier selection and award decisions to secure the most favorable commercial terms while maintaining quality and compliance.
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical suppliers and vendors. Establish long-term framework agreements that balance cost efficiency with supply reliability, ensuring business continuity and mitigating procurement risks.
  • Procurement Spend Optimization: Analyze historical and current procurement spend data to identify savings opportunities, negotiate favorable pricing, and implement cost-reduction strategies without compromising product quality or service levels. Drive sustainable savings through volume consolidation, competitive bidding, and process improvements.
  • Supply Chain Risk Management: Proactively assess and mitigate supply chain risks to prevent disruptions in pharmaceutical availability. Monitor supplier performance, compliance with contractual obligations, and adherence to regulatory requirements, implementing corrective actions as necessary to maintain operational integrity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with pharmacy, clinical, finance, and supply chain teams to align procurement strategies with operational needs and patient care objectives. Serve as a trusted advisor, providing insights and recommendations to support informed decision-making across the organization.
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting: Develop and maintain robust reporting mechanisms to track procurement KPIs, savings achievements, supplier performance metrics, and compliance status. Present actionable insights and recommendations to senior management to inform strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Continuous Improvement: Champion process improvements and innovation within the procurement function. Identify and implement best practices in category management, supplier engagement, and procurement technology to enhance efficiency, transparency, and value delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Procurement, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or category management, with a strong preference for roles within the pharmaceutical or healthcare sector.
  • Proven track record in pharmaceutical sourcing, supplier negotiations, and contract management, with a deep understanding of healthcare procurement processes and inventory management principles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in spend analysis, category strategy development, and data-driven decision-making to optimize procurement outcomes.
  • Exceptional negotiation, analytical, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across diverse teams and organizational levels.
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities, capable of articulating complex procurement concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and experience with enterprise procurement or ERP systems, such as SAP or Oracle.

Preferred Skills & Competencies

  • Hands-on experience within hospitals, healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, or group purchasing organizations (GPOs), with a deep understanding of healthcare procurement standards and compliance requirements.
  • Professional certifications such as CIPS, CPSM, CSCP, or equivalent, demonstrating a commitment to excellence in procurement and supply chain management.
  • Familiarity with e-procurement platforms, supplier relationship management (SRM) tools, and advanced analytics software to streamline procurement processes and enhance visibility.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyze cost structures, identify value drivers, and implement strategic cost optimization initiatives.
  • Experience in supplier risk management, business continuity planning, and contingency strategy development to ensure resilient supply chains.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple high-impact sourcing projects simultaneously, delivering results within tight deadlines and under pressure.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, decision-making, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with a focus on driving measurable outcomes and continuous improvement.
