Chief Technology Officer

Position Overview

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is a pivotal leadership role within the Esports Foundation, tasked with spearheading the organization’s technology, platform, data, AI, and digital strategy. As a key driver of business transformation, scalability, and long-term institutional value, the CTO will establish and lead the permanent technology, data, and AI capabilities that can be leveraged across the Esports World Cup, Esports Nations Cup, and future initiatives. This role is instrumental in reducing fragmentation, enabling the Foundation to operate more effectively at scale, and ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the CTO will collaborate closely with the CEO and the Executive Leadership Team to deliver robust systems, data-driven insights, automation, and technology capabilities that enhance decision-making and organizational performance. The role demands a deep understanding of the business landscape, including live events, media and production, distribution, audience engagement, commercial objectives, and international operations, and the ability to translate these needs into scalable, future-proof technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Technology & Platform Strategy

The CTO will be responsible for defining and executing the Foundation’s technology-enabled transformation strategy. This includes:

• Leading the strategic use of technology, data, AI, and automation to redesign operational workflows and enhance organizational efficiency.
• Collaborating with functional leaders to transition from project-based delivery to permanent, reusable technology capabilities that drive scalability and value.
• Establishing common platforms, APIs, and reusable capabilities across events, products, and programs to ensure consistency and reduce redundancy.
• Translating strategic priorities into scalable technology solutions and advising the CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and relevant oversight bodies on critical technology decisions.
• Partnering with the Digital Products team to align architecture, engineering, and technical delivery with product roadmap priorities, while jointly making build, buy, or partner decisions where applicable.
• Evaluating technology investments based on strategic value, scalability, total cost of ownership, and long-term capability requirements.

Data & Artificial Intelligence

The CTO will own the Foundation’s AI strategy, infrastructure, and governance, with a focus on driving measurable productivity improvements, reducing cycle times, and enhancing decision-making. Key responsibilities include:

• Developing and implementing the Foundation’s AI strategy, including infrastructure, platforms, governance frameworks, and adoption roadmaps.
• Providing shared AI infrastructure, tools, data access, standards, and enablement programs to foster cross-functional adoption and innovation.
• Collaborating with functional leaders to identify and scale high-value AI use cases, ensuring accountability for adoption and business outcomes within each function.
• Enabling the scaling of AI and automation across the organization to support a lean, high-performing operating model at greater scale.
• Establishing the Foundation’s authoritative data layer, encompassing entities such as players, clubs, teams, competitions, media assets, partners, and other core operational data points.
• Ensuring consistent identities, schemas, and data standards across all platforms and products to maintain data integrity and interoperability.
• Securing reliable and independent access to critical data, where contractually and technically feasible, to support informed decision-making.
• Govern data as a strategic asset, ensuring proper stewardship, quality, accessibility, and utilization in decision-making processes.

Media, Competition & Event Technology

The CTO will oversee the architecture, standards, systems, and integrations that support the Foundation’s media and competition technology environment. This includes:

• Designing and maintaining the technology infrastructure that underpins media assets and competition systems.
• Ensuring seamless integration and interoperability between systems to support live events, media production, and digital distribution.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance the technical foundations supporting digital products, media, and competition platforms.
• Driving innovation in event technology to deliver exceptional experiences for audiences, partners, and stakeholders.

Leadership & Collaboration

The CTO will lead a team of direct and indirect reports, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability. This includes:

• Providing strategic direction and mentorship to the technology leadership team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
• Partnering with the Executive Leadership Team to align technology initiatives with broader business objectives.
• Driving a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging technology and data to enhance operational efficiency and business performance.

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates for this role should possess:

• A proven track record in technology leadership, with experience in scaling technology capabilities in dynamic, high-growth environments.
• Deep expertise in AI, data strategy, and digital transformation, with a focus on measurable business outcomes.
• Strong technical acumen in architecture, engineering, and platform strategy, coupled with a business-oriented mindset.
• Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in technology leadership roles, preferably within the esports, media, entertainment, or related industries.
• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degrees are a plus.
