Key Responsibilities:

• Clinical Excellence and Patient Safety: Review and verify physician’s orders and patient medication profiles to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and adherence to clinical guidelines. Conduct thorough assessments of prescriptions, including strength, dosage, and potential interactions, to guarantee patient tolerance and safety.
• Medication Dispensing and Administration: Implement the unit dose system for inpatient medication preparation, ensuring precise dosing for intravenous admixtures, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and cytotoxic drug compounding. Utilize computerized systems for charging, verification, and modification of inpatient medications while maintaining strict adherence to hospital policies and procedures.
• Drug Information and Education: Provide evidence-based drug information to healthcare professionals and patients to facilitate rational drug therapy. Educate patients and families on medication management, potential side effects, and adherence strategies, tailoring education to individual learning needs, cultural preferences, and developmental levels.
• Operational Leadership: Manage controlled drug inventory, including monthly requirements and stock levels, while ensuring compliance with Ministry of Health (MOH) regulations through periodic spot-checks. Oversee the accurate storage and handling of all pharmaceutical products, including newly delivered medications.
• Staff Development and Training: Conduct orientation and ongoing training for new pharmacy staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Participate in the training and mentorship of pharmacy students, contributing to the development of the next generation of healthcare professionals.
• Quality Assurance and Compliance: Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information in alignment with hospital policies and professional pharmacy standards. Implement and uphold infection control procedures, ensuring a sterile and safe pharmacy environment. Review and update operating manuals every two years to reflect best practices and regulatory changes.
• Continuous Professional Development: Stay abreast of advancements in pharmaceutical science, equipment, and antidote information through ongoing education and training. Collaborate with hospital leadership to update the Hospital Formulary, ensuring access to the most effective and cost-efficient medications.
• Patient-Centered Care: Actively involve patients and families in their care plans, respecting their autonomy and preferences. Allocate time for comprehensive patient education, assessing readiness to learn, and documenting education sessions in medical records. Promote health teaching and health promotion tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
• Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by superiors, leveraging your expertise to support the broader mission of NMC Hospitals and Clinics.
