Job Purpose

The Process Engineer (Ethylene Glycol) plays a pivotal role in ensuring operational excellence, troubleshooting complex issues, and optimizing unit performance to meet strategic objectives. This position is instrumental in maintaining process integrity, driving long-term improvements, and supporting the development of feasibility studies to enhance plant efficiency and sustainability. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, management, and external stakeholders, to deliver innovative solutions that align with SABIC’s commitment to safety, quality, and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Support and Troubleshooting: Provide expert process knowledge to resolve plant upsets, support startup and shutdown operations, and ensure adherence to defined operating envelopes. Conduct complex troubleshooting to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
  • Process Integrity and Optimization: Monitor plant performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement best practices to enhance efficiency. Prepare and consolidate feasibility studies, ensuring alignment with plant requirements and organizational goals. Utilize process modeling tools to support optimization and modification initiatives.
  • Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with Sharq policies, SHEQ procedures, and ISO-certified standards. Contribute to achieving target safety, health, environment, and quality rates while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Project and Study Management:
    • Develop and follow up on project packages, including feasibility studies, with regular updates to stakeholders on a weekly and monthly basis.
    • Participate actively in the Management of Change Committee (MOCC) to evaluate and implement changes that enhance operational efficiency and safety.
    • Prepare and review study scopes, ensuring they meet the requirements of the plants and align with strategic objectives.
  • Catalyst Management and Technology Evaluation: Conduct new catalyst evaluations, select optimal catalysts based on techno-economic feasibility, and monitor performance to ensure selectivity and yield remain within design parameters. Support plants in troubleshooting catalyst-related issues and identify opportunities for technology adaptation.
  • Utilities and Equipment Monitoring: Monitor the quality and efficiency of utilities, including steam boilers and water systems, and advise operations on deviations to maintain optimal performance. Prepare monthly performance reports and recommend improvements to enhance overall plant efficiency.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Serve as a liaison between the plant, licensors, Technology and Innovation (T&I), other affiliates, and vendors to facilitate seamless communication and project execution. Represent the process engineering team in internal committees, such as the S&E committee, to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Mentorship and Development: Act as a mentor and body engineer for junior process engineers, grooming their skills, monitoring their progress, and validating their contributions to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates for this role should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in process engineering within the chemical or petrochemical industry. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential, along with a proven ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Proficiency in process modeling software and a deep understanding of ethylene glycol production processes are highly desirable. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to safety, sustainability, and operational excellence while driving innovation and continuous improvement.
