Job Purpose

As a Patient Care Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, compassionate patient care while supporting healthcare professionals in a dynamic clinical environment. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of duties designed to ensure patient safety, comfort, and well-being, while maintaining operational efficiency within the clinic or procedure room. Key Responsibilities and Duties

To excel in this position, you will be responsible for the following core functions:

• Preparation and Maintenance of Clinical Environment:

  Ensure the clinic or procedure room is fully equipped with all necessary instruments, devices, and supplies, maintaining optimal readiness for patient care. This includes verifying the availability of medical equipment, restocking supplies as needed, and ensuring that all items are in proper working condition. You will also be responsible for monitoring inventory levels and coordinating with the main store to replenish supplies promptly.

• Patient Assessment and Documentation:

  Conduct thorough assessments of patients, including measuring vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and pain levels), reviewing medical history, evaluating fall risks, and screening for symptoms of infectious diseases. Accurately document all findings in the patient care system, adhering to organizational standards and infection control protocols. Your documentation will serve as a critical component of the patient’s medical record and will support continuity of care.

• Assistance During Examinations and Procedures:

  Support physicians and healthcare professionals during patient examinations and clinic-based procedures by ensuring patient comfort and safety. This may include preparing the patient, assisting with positioning, and providing necessary supplies or instruments in a timely manner. Your role is essential in facilitating smooth and efficient clinical operations while maintaining a patient-centered approach.

• Coordination of Patient Care:

  Coordinate and schedule follow-up appointments, referrals to specialists, and diagnostic tests to ensure seamless continuity of care. You will work closely with the healthcare team to streamline patient flow and minimize delays, ensuring that all necessary services are arranged and confirmed prior to procedures.

• Administration of Basic Medical Tasks:

  Perform routine medical tasks such as applying simple dressings, administering topical applications and eye drops, and conducting point-of-care testing as required. These responsibilities must be carried out with precision, adhering to established protocols and infection control guidelines to ensure patient safety and comfort.

• Inventory and Supply Management:

  Monitor and manage medical supplies and equipment, ensuring the outpatient department (OPD) remains adequately stocked. Track stock usage against the unit’s inventory, report deficits or nearly expired supplies to the Nurse Manager, and take proactive measures to maintain optimal supply levels. Additionally, you will ensure accurate charging for services rendered to patients, contributing to the financial integrity of the department.

• Patient Mobility and Safety:

  Assist patients with mobility needs, including transferring them between beds, chairs, or other locations, as well as aiding with walking or the use of mobility aids. Your role is critical in preventing falls and ensuring patient safety during movement. You will also report any incidents or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel and assist with necessary follow-up actions to promote a secure environment.

• Professional Development and Compliance:

  Stay current with professional development requirements to enhance your knowledge, skills, and clinical practice. Maintain strict patient confidentiality, adhere to cybersecurity policies, and comply with the organization’s code of conduct and safety protocols. You will also actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the scope of your role, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in patient care.

• Flexibility and Team Collaboration:

  Demonstrate flexibility by floating to other units as needed and completing tasks assigned by the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager based on competency and availability. Work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and remain available on call as required to meet departmental needs. Collaborate effectively with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare team members to support patient care plans and ensure coordinated delivery of care.

Qualifications and Skills

To succeed in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

• A high school diploma or equivalent; completion of a Patient Care Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant program is preferred.
• Minimum of one year of experience in a healthcare setting, with a strong understanding of patient care principles and infection control protocols.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Physical stamina and strength to assist patients with mobility needs and perform duties that may require prolonged standing, lifting, or bending.
• Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality, adhering to ethical standards, and upholding the organization’s values of person-centered care.
• Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic computer applications.
