The Opportunity
This is not just another CAD role—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in the entire product development lifecycle, from initial concept exploration to prototyping, testing, and final documentation. You’ll collaborate closely with Electrical, Controls, and Industrial Design teams to create integrated solutions that address real-world challenges. Our projects are diverse, timelines are ambitious, and the problems we solve are often novel, requiring adaptability, ingenuity, and a willingness to think outside the box.
What You’ll Achieve
As a Mechanical Design Engineer at DRL, your work will drive impactful innovation across multiple dimensions:
- Design and Modeling Excellence: Craft precise 3D parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, ensuring parametric models and engineering drawings adhere to the highest standards. Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Reliability (DFR) principles to optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability. Conduct tolerance analysis and annotate drawings with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to support internal fabrication processes. Translate multidisciplinary requirements from Electrical, Controls, and Industrial Design into cohesive mechanical solutions that meet performance and functional objectives.
- Prototyping and Hands-On Innovation: Bring designs to life by building, testing, and refining physical prototypes using advanced techniques such as FDM and resin 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and manual fabrication. Leverage 3D scanning and reverse engineering workflows to digitize existing components or physical references, ensuring accuracy and precision. Plan and execute structured testing protocols to validate design decisions, iterating rapidly based on real-world feedback to refine solutions.
- Collaborative Problem-Solving: Actively contribute to enhancing lab workflows by proposing innovative tools, processes, and methodologies as the team scales. Tackle complex, ambiguous challenges by breaking them down into structured engineering problems and driving them toward validated solutions. Develop creative mechanical mechanisms and design solutions tailored to unique, non-standard requirements where off-the-shelf answers are insufficient.
- Comprehensive Documentation: Produce meticulous engineering documentation, including detailed drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and design rationale records. Author clear, technical reports that document design decisions, test results, and prototype documentation to facilitate seamless handoffs to manufacturing teams. Maintain organized CAD file structures and rigorous revision control throughout the project lifecycle to ensure traceability and consistency.

- Education and Experience: Hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development Engineering, or a related field.
