Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Anesthesia Technician to join our esteemed healthcare team. In this critical role, you will work under the direct supervision of licensed anesthesia care providers to ensure the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of anesthesia services. Your responsibilities will encompass the preparation, maintenance, and management of anesthesia-related equipment, supplies, and medications, as well as the provision of essential support during procedures. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional technical proficiency, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities

The Anesthesia Technician will play a pivotal role in the perioperative setting by performing a wide range of duties, including:

• Anesthesia Services Support: Assist licensed anesthesia care providers in the administration of anesthesia and procedural sedation, ensuring all equipment and supplies are readily available and properly maintained.
• Equipment Maintenance and Sterilization: Clean, disinfect, organize, and maintain anesthesia equipment, supplies, and medications in accordance with established schedules and infection control protocols. Ensure all devices are in optimal working condition and ready for use.
• Supply and Medication Management: Monitor and replenish anesthesia medications and supplies to meet operational demands. Manage inventory levels and coordinate with the pharmacy or dispensing systems, such as Pyxis, to ensure accurate and timely distribution.
• Patient Monitoring and Preparation: Prepare and maintain patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during, and after procedures. Tailor preparations to meet the age-specific needs of patients, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
• Procedural Preparation: Assist in the setup and preparation for a variety of anesthesia and interventional procedures, including epidural, spinal, and caudal anesthesia, central line and dialysis catheter insertions, and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and vascular access procedures.
• Equipment Troubleshooting: Perform basic troubleshooting for anesthesia monitors and equipment. Identify and report any malfunctions or defects to the appropriate department for prompt resolution.
• Policy and Compliance Adherence: Strictly adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and standards related to quality improvement, safety, environmental health, and infection control. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
• Medication Administration Support: Prepare, administer, and monitor medications and intravenous fluids under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesia care provider. Maintain accurate documentation of all administered substances.
• Airway Management and Patient Positioning: Assist in airway management and ensure proper patient positioning during surgical and procedural interventions to optimize safety and comfort.
• Patient Monitoring Competency: Demonstrate proficiency in monitoring patients’ physiological parameters and providing support in emergency or resuscitative situations. This includes understanding monitoring requirements, responding to complications, administering reversal agents, and assessing recovery criteria.
• Team Collaboration: Foster effective working relationships with anesthesia department staff, including registered nurses, surgical technicians, and equipment specialists. Collaborate seamlessly to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
• Safety Reporting: Proactively monitor the work environment for potential safety hazards and report any concerns or incidents to the appropriate authorities in a timely manner.
• Patient and Family Education: Provide clear and compassionate education to patients and their families regarding anesthesia procedures, health conditions, treatment plans, and preventive measures to promote informed decision-making and recovery.

Qualifications and Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Education: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) diploma or equivalent qualification in anesthesia technology from a recognized institution. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with structured training in anesthesia assistance may be considered.
• Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in a tertiary care center, with hands-on exposure to anesthesia services and equipment management.
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid license to practice as an anesthesia technician in accordance with regional health regulatory authorities (e.g., SCFHS, DHA). Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required.
• Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in Arabic is highly preferred to facilitate effective communication with diverse patient populations and healthcare teams.
• Technical Skills: Competency in using computer systems for documentation, inventory management, and equipment monitoring. Familiarity with anesthesia dispensing systems, such as Pyxis, is advantageous.
